yes, you technically can make a claim, but would suggest otherwise, if you do make a claim your insurance premium will skyrocket and the fact that you made a claim will be on you insurance record for 3 years. also i know many insurance companies actually drop their customers after they have made claims. 2011 Chevy Equinox or 2011 Toyota Highlander? My husband and I are getting ready to purchase our first vehicle together! We are getting ready to start a family and would like a reliable SUV with decent gas mileage. We have it narrowed down to two choices, either a 2011 Chevy Equinox LTZ with Nav or a 2011 Toyota Highlander Limited w/o Nav. The Equinox gets great gas mileage, but I'm not sure how safe/reliable Chevy is. I currently own a 2000 toyota Celica and feel very safe in it, but I know Toyota has had some issues lately. EGR valves in automobiles are part of a vehicle's emissions control system; they directly affect an engine's performance. EGR stands for "exhaust gas regulation." EGR valves were introduced in the 1970s to help control the production of nitrogen oxide. Created by automobile engines, nitrogen oxide is considered responsible for creating smog. The EGR valve works by lowering combustion temperatures, which helps to reduce the amount of nitrogen oxide produced by the engine.
Styles
Generally, older vehicles' EGR valves operate mechanically: Vacuum or mechanical linkages control the opening and closing of valves and operate according to the opening and closing of the throttle. Newer vehicles generally use electronics to control the operation of EGR valves; which are controlled by solenoids connected to vehicles' onboard computers. Either type of valve performs the same function; they differ only in how they are controlled.
Function
Both electronically and mechanically operated EGR valves work by introducing a controlled amount of exhaust gas into the fuel-and-air mixture. Adding exhaust gases has the effect of lowering the temperature of the combustion process within the combustion chambers. Lower combustion temperatures enhance the burning of the fuel-and-air mixture, which results in more complete combustion and lower levels of pollutants, increasing engine efficiency and lowering pollutant emission levels.
Malfunctions
Malfunctioning or failed EGR valves will cause an automobile's engine to run poorly. An EGR valve that has failed can cause an engine to stall, idle roughly, and have poor acceleration and increased fuel consumption. A malfunctioning EGR valve also will cause exhaust emissions to increase, which can result in a vehicle failing emissions testing.
Repair
EGR valves are sealed units and are not repairable. An EGR valve may become fouled with deposits that can cause the valve to stick and operate poorly; in these instances cleaning may restore proper operation of the valve. A failed EGR valve must be replaced with a new unit.
Mounting
EGR valves are typically mounted on the intake manifold, either near the carburetor or toward the rear of the engine. Some vehicles have EGR valves that are mounted on tubes connected to the exhaust pipe and mounted generally to the side of the engine. The valve is usually saucer-shaped; mechanical ones have one or more vacuum hoses connected to them. Electronic EGR valves have at least one or more wires connected to them in addition to vacuum hoses.

The EGR on your 1999 Chevy Blazer looks like a canister that sits on top of the intake manifold. A valve on the bottom of the unit allows exhaust gasses to recirculate back into the combustion chamber through the intake manifold. This helps reduce nitrous oxide, called NOX, emissions. When this unit malfunctions, it can cause serious idle and acceleration problems for your Blazer. To make sure that the Blazer's EGR valve is the problem, you need to troubleshoot it.

Step by Step :

Start the engine and allow your Blazer to warm up to normal operating temperature. When the needle on the water temperature gauge sits in the middle of the gauge, the engine is warmed up.

Open the hood and have an assistant rev the engine while you check the plunger movement of the EGR valve. The valve is located behind the distributor toward the back of the engine on the intake manifold. As you rev the engine from 1,500 RPM to 2,500 RPM, you should notice the plunger move. If you don't, then verify that there are no holes in the vacuum line connected to the valve. Also, make sure the line is secure on the valve. Be careful when touching the vacuum lines. Only touch the line and not the valve because the valve will be very hot.

Shut the engine off and allow it to cool.

Unscrew the hose clamp on the air intake tubing and pull the tubing off the throttle body and push it aside so that you have better access to the EGR valve. You may need to disconnect the idle air-temperature sensor wire in the process.

Unplug the EGR valve electrical connector and unbolt the two mounting bolts on the valve. Then, remove the valve.

Visually inspect the valve openings for carbon buildup. If there is any carbon buildup and the valve didn't move when the engine was running, clean or replace the valve.
